ABOUT
Austin Murray is an up-and-coming lyric baritone who strives to change the status quo of what it means to be a classically trained vocalist today. With the ability to transition from musical theater, to Bel Calto repertoire, to early music, Austin has performed a variety of roles with UNT Opera, including Masetto in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, The Count in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm in Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, Valentin in Gounod's Faust, and The Forester in Janáček's Cunning Little Vixen. Before his collegiate career, Austin performed in various supporting and leading roles in musicals, including Curly (Oklahoma!) Javert (les Miserables) and Motel (Fiddler on the Roof). In addition to his passion for theatrical performing, he is also dedicated to professional choral singing. Austin has performed as a soloist with the UNT University Singers and Collegium Singers under the baton of Dr. Richard Sparks, and was heavily involved with the UNT A-Capella Choir, directed by Dr. Allen Hightower. Austin recently sang with the Dallas Chamber Choir and Dallas POPS Orchestra in their performance of The Legend of Zelda, Symphony of the Goddesses. This was a dream gig for the young baritone, who still “geeks out” over a good video game. Austin enjoys stretching his artistry with thought-provoking projects, including his recent portrayal of Edgar in Tom Cipullos’ short opera, Lucy.
